International Site Approach
Our Philosophy: Integrating Research with Prevention, Care and Treatment
To accomplish the research mission at international network sites, USMHRP integrates HIV prevention, care and treatment and vaccine development into one comprehensive initiative. Our philosophy is that:
- A credible prevention program must accompany any vaccine research study
- In resource-poor settings, medical benefits including comprehensive HIV care and treatment must be available to the entire community, not just to research volunteers
Site Development
The U.S. Military HIV Research Program aims to help develop permanent international research centers within each local (in-country) ministry of public health infrastructure. At its international sites, USMHRP supports the following:
- Program administration and management
- State-of-the-art laboratory services
- Information technology services
- Clinical services
- HIV prevalence and incidence monitoring
Services Provided
USMHRP field sites are successful because the infrastructure and staff developed to execute the research mission has been expanded to provide the following:
- Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT)
- Accurate diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic infections in HIV-positive patients
- Mother-to-child care prevention using Neviripine
- Comprehensive treatment, including antiretroviral therapy
Funding from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has enabled USMHRP to expand beyond research, which is a critical accompaniment to vaccine testing activities.
