New MHRP PEPFAR-funded Study to Examine Malaria and TB HIV Co-infection in Kenyan Defence Forces

This week, the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) began a new research study in Kenya in collaboration with the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF).

The study, called RV292, will assess the prevalence of HIV-1, HIV/tuberculosis co-infection and malaria among the active duty within the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF). Research staff opened enrollment for the study at multiple sites in Kenya earlier this month.

The study will enroll 1,300 active duty military personnel from 15 military barracks. The study will also look to describe behavioral risk factors for HIV acquisition within the military population. The KDF leadership has been involved in every stage of development and will continue to play a key role in the study execution and analysis. This is the first study of its kind with the KDF.

WRAIR has been conducting infectious diseases research in Kenya for nearly 50 years under U.S. Army Medical Research Directorate - Kenya (USAMRD-K). This new research project is funded by PEPFAR and conducted through the PEPFAR-supported HIV prevention, care, and treatment program led by MHRP in Kenya since 2004.
