Socioeconomic Impacts of Antiretroviral Therapy and Gender

A longitudinal study of Kenyan agricultural workers

The MHRP Kenya team has been involved in a four-year prospective cohort study in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute and Boston University. The program evaluates the impact of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) on labor productivity in tea plantation workers.

They recently published a paper on the socio-economic impacts of antiretroviral therapy. This longitudinal observational study, funded and led by Boston University, analyzed company payroll records for HIV-infected tea estate workers and a comparison group for a 37-month period covering two years before and one year after initiating ART. The study noted some gaps in labor productivity, and called for more research on socio-economic implications for women on ARTs. Full abstract found here.
