Event:  Partnering for an HIV Free World

Location:  Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), Silver Spring, MD, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

 

Join WRAIR for a series of talks to commemorate World AIDS Day. There will be a special focus on Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission efforts in Kenya. Dr. Fred Sawe, a physician from Kenya who leads HIV research, prevention and treatment in his community, will be the keynote speaker at 10:00 am.

Event: Persistent Voices: Poetry by Writers Lost to AIDS

Walter Reed Project – Kericho, Kenya

Event: HIV Testing and Counseling, Rapid Results Initiative (HTCRRI)

Date: 15 November to 10 December 2010

Location: South Rift Valley

All PEPFAR partner sites involved in Counseling and Testing (CT) will participate in HTCRRI with the goal of testing 80,000 individuals.

Event:  SRV AIDS awareness soccer tournament

Date:  25 November to 30 November 2010

Location:  Kericho County - Kericho

Nine soccer teams involved in HIV prevention outreach activities will compete for the South Rift Valley WAD Cup 2010 on World AIDS Day.

Location: Kericho primary School Hall - Kericho

This is a beauty contest with a focus on HIV prevention that brings together young and talented women. The contest showcases the women's talents who compete for the Miss Kericho title. Spectators are encouraged to know their HIV status and testing services will be available onsite.

 

Event: World AIDS Day 2010

Date: 01 December  2010

Location:  Moi Gardens - Kericho

WAD 2010 will be marked with a procession through the town’s streets. Events will include entertainment and speeches by various stakeholders in HIV prevention care and treatment in the South Rift valley. After the speeches the soccer finals will take place at Kericho green stadium.

Location: Kericho Primary School Hall

This is an international body building event bringing together athletes from Kericho and beyond. It is  is popular World AIDS Day-related event that mobilizes communities to prevent HIV.  Testing and counseling services will be offered onsite. 

  All Kenya events listed above are organized by the Kenyan Government through National AIDS control council structures in Conjunction with Walter Reed Project- Kericho.

Walter Reed Program - Tanzania

Event: Kicking AIDS out of Rukwa-Tanzania

Date: 24 November to 01 December 2010

Location: Rukwa, Southern Highlands of Tanzania

Activities will include several HIV prevention activities including a football/soccer tournament which will take place the week preceding December 1, 2010. The Regional Commissioner will be the guest of honor and will hand out a prize to the winning team on December 1, and also deliver a speech related to HIV/AIDS.

This event is organized by WRP -T and Rukwa Regional Medical Office.

Uganda - Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)

Event:  Everybody Wins! Quiz Show 

MUWRP will participate in collaborative US Embassy WAD activities in Uganda featuring the popular Everybody Wins! quiz show. This year they will reach out to underserved and vulnerable populations to deliver HIV and AIDS facts in seven major, hard-to-reach areas of Uganda:

•    Kabale (19 November)

•    Mityana, (01 December; U.S. Ambassador Jerry P. Lanier will attend)

•    Arua (08 December) 

•    Soroti (11 December)

•    Hoima, (16 December)

•    Masindi (18 December; at the Police Academy)

Thailand – AFRIMS

Event:  WAD Parade and Information Booths

Location: Pattaya, Thailand

Date: 01 December 2010

The MHRP site in Thailand, centered at AFRIMS, will participate in a parade down the beach road and there will be booths set up at the end of the parade route. This year there will also be activities during the week preceeding December 1.
