Dr. Merlin Robb, Deputy Director of Clinical Research participated in a panel discussion entitled, “Progress Toward an HIV Vaccine.” The panel discussed progress that's been made including the follow-up to the RV144 Thai prime-boost trial results and in the development of the next generation of vaccine candidates for testing.
Dr. Robb then presented at a conference session where he provided an update of ongoing research efforts including virus characterization, immunogenicity studies and correlates pilot studies. He emphasized that the goal continues to be a globally effective HIV vaccine—one that is safe, effective in high-risk populations, protects against multiple types of HIV and is accessible to those who need it most.
Building on the past success of RV144, Robb shared some of the plans for upcoming clinical studies. Robb said that “Our highest priority is confirming and extending the observations of RV144. Next steps are correlates research, which is underway, and regional clinical studies, with the goal of developing a globally-effective vaccine.”
