A small congressional delegation recently visited MHRP’s site in Kenya, Walter Reed Project – Kenya (WRP). The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)led the delegation of eight, which included four congressional representatives.

The visit included tours of research facilities and PEPFAR partners in the Kericho area that provide HIV prevention, care and treatment services. The delegation also visited CDC and USAID sites in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya with a special focus on the PEPFAR program.

While in Kericho, WRP leadership provided a program overview and the delegation toured the Kenya Medical Research Institute/WRP Clinical Research Center and lab. Additionally the delegation visited the Kericho District Hospital HIV Program where they toured the HIV/TB clinic, HIV clinic and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission clinics. Before leaving for Kisumu, the delegation stopped and saw WRP’s innovative PEPFAR-funded prevention programs, including the Kericho Youth Center and the Live With Hope Center.

Each year IDSA organizes a similar trip to Africa with Capitol Hill staff to illustrate the impact of infectious disease research.
